Macky Auditorium

UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER

The Historic Macky Auditorium was completed in 1922 with a major ADA and balcony seating upgrade in 1984. The Life Safety and Insulation Upgrades project addressed numerous areas in the building that was not code compliant or energy efficient. Basement areas were reconstructed, and seating was redone to eliminate all combustible materials. New fire sprinklers were added to bring the building into compliance.

Specialty trim work was created to conceal the new fire sprinklers and maintain the historic finishes.

New rated walls and doors were incorporated into the historic finishes to fully blend with the existing historic character. The acoustic impact of the attic insulation was studied, and a solution was provided that would enhance acoustic performance. In conjunction with the life safety improvements, the theatre restored historic trim, cornices, and rosettes that were painted in the original historic colors to bring the theatre back to its original splendor.
