Dahlia Residence
Mid-Century Modern Home
The renovation of this Mid-Century Modern home reclaims underutilized spaces to create a tailored environment for working, living, and aging in place. By redistributing the home’s layout and adding essential functional zones, the design restores balance, improves daily flow, and revitalizes the home’s architectural character. A previous owner had added a large front Great Room intended for entertaining, but the space was disproportionately scaled and rarely used.
The renovation strategically reorganizes the home’s layout, beginning with the kitchen.
By relocating it to capture a portion of the oversized front room, the design enlarges the living and dining areas at the back of the house, restoring balance to the home’s circulation and functionality. The remaining area at the front becomes a right-sized, light-filled office, an essential space missing from the original layout. To support the new open living, kitchen, and dining, a structural column was required. Instead of concealing it, the design celebrates it with integrated decorative shelving and a vibrant accent color, transforming it into a sculptural feature that anchors the space. New finishes revive the home’s Mid‑Century identity. The homeowner describes the transformation as “wonderful” and is delighted by how the renovation has reshaped the daily experience.
