Roe Green Theatre
UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER
The Roe Green University Theatre is a 250-seat proscenium theatre located on the second floor of the east wing of the University Theatre building on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. AW conducted a feasibility study for the University Theatre that would be submitted to a private donor for a possible grant donation. The feasibility study included acoustic and mechanical renovation, along with functional improvements for sound and lighting positions to enhance the teaching theatre. The Design Team investigated user experiences, both from an on-stage and an audience vantage point. The team visually inspected existing building plans and systems and ran acoustic testing. The final study and program plan included a detailed acoustic assessment with proposed architectural, mechanical and equipment solutions, target schedule, and project cost estimates.
The feasibility study was well-received, and the funds were awarded for the renovation.
The renovation included acoustical clouds based on a boat hull design, maximizing sound reflection and distribution, combined with a new mechanical system with unique “airdrop” distribution provided an acoustic performance that exceeded the goals of the University and provided the best, acoustic Shakespearean theatre in Colorado. The renovation of the theatre was very successful, and in honor of the donor, the theatre was renamed the Roe Green Theatre.
