Architectural Workshop was selected to modify the historic D&F Tower lobby to provide a new stair and
elevator as mandated by ADA accessibility code.
The new stair was designed based upon the original stair used in the May D&F building from 1909
with modifications to meet current codes. Select marbles, wood, and metals were used to match the
existing historic lobby. The accessible elevator was placed in the existing atrium with a glass enclosure
to provide a light atmosphere and a strong contrast between the historic and the atrium addition.s
- Glass elevator enclosure with fiber optic light and variable color tones
- Historically accurate marble stair and cherry hand rail with custom fabricated Newell posts
- ADA and accessibility requirements were fulfilled, while enhancing the historical significance of the building
