The City of Lakewood will have four stations on the West Corridor Light Rail. Architectural Workshop was asked to help with an alternate design for their Oak Street Station. To make RTD’s base design more pedestrian friendly for the plaza a seating wall with plantings now separates the drop off areas from the waiting areas. Landscaping with trees for shading and benches between the primary walkways provide resting spaces. The Structures on the site were simplified and the design was adjusted to create an architectural style consistent with the research and technology centers located in the area. The main station pavilion is centrally located and acts as a “gateway” from the station to the surrounding businesses. The pavilion has a slopping roof that opens to the entrance and “twists” to allow for solar panels and sky lights.
Sustainable features include low energy consumption lighting, low water consumption planting and landscape and permeable landscape areas.
