UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER

The University of Colorado Denver renovated an old theater space on the lower level of the historic Tivoli Building located on the Auraria Campus in Denver, Colorado. The space is approximately 1,240 square feet with the addition of a mezzanine of 500 square feet. As a collaborative research lab suite, this space accommodates multi-departmental users from the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Arts & Media (CAM) and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) and provides a hands-on environment where students from the CAM and CEAS come together to combine their courses in arts and technology. The space consists of a multi-use conference room, three open lab spaces, storage and a mezzanine with an office and open workstations.

The addition of a mezzanine, multiple entries, and flexible furnishings convert a dark basement theater space into a high tech, stimulating and creative environment for students to use, create and develop.

Through careful understanding of the programmatic needs, the entire space was designed to cultivate growth as a transdisciplinary center for innovation. This hands-on space has writable surfaces, work benches with tool boxes, peg board and lockable uppers. The renovation also features a “glass box” conference space with an operable glass wall that can be completely opened to the innovation lab for more flexible usage.
